Tour program Trinidad and Tobago:
Day 1 – 2: By air from Prague to Trinidad and Tobago
Fly from Prague to Trinidad – an island full of contrasts! Exotic nature, vibrant culture and vibrant life, the rhythm of calypso music and the rumble of steel drums, fantastic wildlife viewing opportunities with the backdrop of lush rainforest. To top it all off, a great cuisine that combines Indian and African flavours.
Day 3: Mysterious Caves and the Magnificent Seven
In the morning we will take a short ferry ride to Gaspar Grande Island, a former whaling station. The cruise often offers the opportunity to spot dolphins. On the island, we will take a hike to a cave system with stalactites and a clear pool where the sun’s rays illuminate the turquoise water. We then return to the capital city of Port of Spain, which impresses visitors with its contrasting historic and modern architecture. As we stroll through Queen’s Park Savannah, we’ll discover the Magnificent Seven – seven grand colonial buildings, now used as the residence of the Prime Minister or the Catholic Archbishop, to name a few. We then visit the authentic “Steel Orchestra Panyard” where local traditional bands rehearse nightly. You will have the opportunity to experience steel drum music in its birthplace.
Day 4: Ibisi reds, Hindu temples and asphalt lake
In the morning, we visit a steel drum factory, the only musical instruments from the 20th century that have gained worldwide popularity. We’ll see how these instruments are handmade and try our hand at playing them. We then head to the Indian part of Trinidad, where we visit the 26-metre high statue of the god Hanuman, the tallest outside the Himalayan region. For lunch we will enjoy a traditional curry that is eaten with the hands – cutlery is of course available on request. In the afternoon, we head to La Brea, the largest tarmac lake in the world. We’ll stroll along its tough but flexible black surface. The lake is a vital economic resource and the asphalt from it is used to build roads all over the world. We’ll end the day at Caroni Bird Sanctuary, where we’ll see hundreds of red ibis returning to their roosting grounds during a boat ride through the mangroves. This natural spectacle is breathtaking.
Day 5: Shark sandwiches on the white beach, giant bamboo and capuchin monkeys
In the Chaguaramas area, we’re mesmerized by the spectacular vegetation with giant bamboo and ferns. An ideal place for a morning hike, during which we can see the Capuchin monkeys. These monkeys feast on the seeds of maripa palms, which they smash against the branches to get to the nutritious kernel. Along the way, we’ll also look for the rare Trinidad guano or the swallow-tailed moonbird.
Around noon, we’ll cross the Santa Cruz Valley and the romantic coastline of Maracas Bay. We will spend the afternoon on Trinidad’s most beautiful beach, almost 2 km long with fine white sand, swimming in the Caribbean Sea and tasting the local specialty “Bake & Shark” – fresh shark in fried bread.
Day 6: Trip to the legendary Asa Wright Nature Centre
After breakfast, we drive towards northern mountains to the Asa Wright Nature Centre, a 1,500 hectare nature centre that is mostly covered in jungle. This area is one of the best birding locations in the Caribbean. The drive along Blanchisseuse Road alone, winding through the jungle, is a unique experience. With a local guide, we will explore the diversity of local flora and fauna. In this area, 108 mammal species, 460 bird species, 55 reptile species, 25 amphibian species and 617 butterflies have been recorded – no other area in the Caribbean can boast such biodiversity. Bird lovers come from all over the world to see rare and beautifully coloured species After a three-course lunch, we have the opportunity to relax on the veranda with a cup of local cacao tea or visit a small waterfall where we can refresh ourselves in the cool mountain water. In the evening we visit the Savannah district where we sample culinary delights at street stalls, from West African stews to Indian roti pancakes.
Day 7: Hummingbird and Giant Tortoise Garden on Trinidad Island
After breakfast, we head to the Maracas Valley, covered in tropical jungle. Here we will visit a hummingbird farm where we can admire the magic of these flying gems. A garden full of flying hummingbirds has been transformed by 70-year-old Theo Ferguson into his life’s work. After lunch, we continue to the wild northeast coast of Trinidad to the village of Grande Riviere. Its beach is one of the most important nesting sites for the giant leatherback, the largest species of sea turtle. In the evening, we watch these up to 700kg giants lay up to 120 eggs in the sand before returning to the sea. This natural spectacle lasts about 4 hours and leaves a deep impression on all visitors.
Day 8: Nariva Wetland, Bush-Bush Canoe Reserve and flight to Tobago
Today we will travel to Trinidad’s largest freshwater wetlands, protected by international conventions. We canoe through mysterious mangrove forests, home to kingfishers, herons and mud crabs. Next, we enter open freshwater marshes in search of their rare avian inhabitants. After a short trek through the wetlands, we’ll try to find the endangered Trinidadian white-cheeked capuchin monkey, the red-breasted nuthatch or the rare manatee. In the evening we fly to our sister island of Tobago, where we will stay in the fishing village of Castara, right on the beach with turquoise waters.
Day 9: Bread from the slave ovens, dream beaches and African drums
This day is yours to organise as you wish. You can sleep in, enjoy the sunrise with coffee on the terrace by the palm-fringed beach, have breakfast overlooking the sea and go for a long walk along the coast. In the fishing village of Castara, you’ll discover traditional wooden ovens from the slave trade, where locals still bake delicious bread. Afternoons are perfect for snorkelling, and in the evening head to the neighbouring ‘Boathouse’ for an evening of African drumming. There’s also a limbo (a low-bar crawling competition) where the winner gets a bottle of the island’s best rum. On Tobago, everyone can prepare their own breakfast using local ingredients stored in the fridge and enjoy the morning right on their private terrace just 3 metres from the beach.
Day 10: Through the jungle on the slave trails
Early in the morning, we head to the Main Ridge Forest Nature Reserve, located on Tobago’s main mountain ridge at up to 580 metres above sea level. Established in 1776, this reserve is one of the oldest protected rainforests in the Northern Hemisphere. The reserve is home to rare bird species such as the trogon, the blue-breasted pipit and the white-tailed hummingbird. On this guided trek, we will explore the tropical vegetation and immerse ourselves in stories of the lives of the slaves who once worked on the cocoa plantations here. We finish the trek with a refreshing dip in a mountain river and a look at Tobago’s national flower, the chaconia. In the afternoon we head to the beautiful Englishman Bay beach for a swim, snorkel or just relax at sunset with a Caribbean cocktail in hand.
Day 11: A full day exploring Tobago
Today we have a full day tour of Tobago’s most beautiful places. We’ll visit picturesque fishing villages, beautiful bays and beaches, including the village of Charlotteville in the northeast of the island. We will enjoy lunch at the famous “Treehouse” restaurant in Speyside. Optionally, we can take a glass-bottomed boat cruise to Little Tobago Island, which is a nature reserve. Here we can see frigatebirds, faetons or terriers. Finally, we visit the historic Fort King George in the capital Scarborough, where one of the bloodiest naval battles took place in 1677.
Day 12: Snorkelling, barbecue and rum punch on a Caribbean beach
We start the day with coffee under coconut palms at sunrise and a view of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. We then head out with a local fisherman on his boat, which takes us to a picturesque cove with a beach that can only be reached by sea. Along the way we will try to catch some fish, which we will grill on the spot. If we don’t catch anything, the captain has other specialties ready, including a delicious rum punch 🙂 The rest of the day we enjoy snorkeling, volleyball or just relaxing on the white beach.
Day 13: Relax on Tobago’s most famous beach – Pigeon Point
Pigeon Point is a true paradise – turquoise sea, sand as white as powdered sugar, palm trees reaching down to the water and the typical palm-roofed pier that is an iconic motif of the Caribbean. On the beach, you’ll find small bars and an optional glass-bottom boat trip to Buccoo Reef, one of the Caribbean’s most famous coral reefs, home to hundreds of species of tropical fish. Enjoy a refreshing swim at a place called Nylon Pool, where the water is calm and shallow.
Day 14-15: Return to the Czech Republic
After breakfast we depart for Crown Point International Airport. It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to the islands of Trinidad and Tobago and take away memories of an unforgettable trip.
