Tour program:
DAY 1: PRAGUE – MEXICO CITY BY AIR
Fly from Prague to the capital of Mexico, transfer to the hotel and relax after a long journey.
DAY 2: MEXICO CITY, TEOTIHUACÁN
Sightseeing tour of the historic center of Mexico City (UNESCO) and then visit the sacred site of Teotihuacán, the Pyramid of the Sun and Moon (UNESCO).
DAY 3: PUEBLA, THE PYRAMID OF CHOLULA
Colonial town of Puebla (UNESCO) and visit to the world’s largest pyramid in Cholula; in the afternoon, transfer to the foothills of the highest mountain/volcano, Pico de Orizaba (5,747 m).
DAY 4: PICO DE ORIZABA
For those interested, a jeep trip followed by a hike to an altitude of about 4,700 m; in the evening, a tour of the town of Ciudad Serdán.
DAY 5: OAXACA
Drive through a landscape of giant cacti to the Indian state of Oaxaca; the Zapotec pyramid on Monte Albán, the colonial city of Oaxaca (UNESCO).
DAY 6: TULA TREE, MITLA, HIERVE AL AGUA WATERFALLS
The Tula tree (“Árbol de Tula”) – probably the most bulky tree on the American continent; the site of Mitla (UNESCO); visit to a mezcal distillery; the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua – swimming.
DAY 7: TEHUANTEPEC, PUERTO ARISTA
Morning walk through the town of Tehuantepec; transfer to the Pacific Ocean – Puerto Arista – rest and swimming.
DAY 8: SUMIDERO CANYON, SAN JUAN DE CHAMULA
Morning visit to Sumidero Canyon and boat trip through the canyon – majestic steep walls, numerous bird species; Indian folklore in the shaman village of San Juan de Chamula; overnight stay in San Cristobal de las Casas.
DAY 9: AGUA AZÚL
Swimming in the travertine cascades of Agua Azúl with the Misol-ha waterfall (made famous by scenes in the film The Predator); there is also an interesting hiking trail leading behind the waterfall to a small karst cave; then transfer to the town of Palenque.
DAY 10: PALENQUE
Visit to the site of Palenque (UNESCO) – the ruins of a Mayan temple are hidden by the dense rainforest on the banks of the Otulúm River; crossing to the Atlantic Ocean – swimming; arrival in Campeche.
DAY 11: CAMPECHE, EDZNA
Tour of the pirate city of Campeche (UNESCO) with its well-preserved Spanish fortifications; transfer to the eastern part of the Yucatán; stop at the Mayan site of Edzna; drive to Chetumal.
DAY 12-13: BELIZE, CAYE CAULKER
By boat to the archipelago of Caye Caulker; two nights here – rest and swim in the Caribbean.
DAY 14: GUATEMALA, LAKE PETÉN ITZÁ
By boat to Belize City and from there to the border with Guatemala, the town of Flores, located in the middle of Lake Petén Itzá.
DAY 15: TIKAL
Visit one of the most important cities of the Mayan civilization with its monumental pyramids – Tikal (UNESCO); located in a tropical rainforest amidst lush vegetation; in the afternoon transfer to Río Dulce.
DAY 16: RÍO DULCE
By boat on the river Río Dulce through the tropical jungle with stops – great biodiversity – observation of numerous birds or the possibility of bathing at a thermal spring; the town of Livingston with its unique black Garifuna culture; transfer to Honduras, to the town of Copán.
DAY 17: HONDURAS, COPÁN
Visit another Mayan city, Copán (UNESCO) with the most famous stelae of the Mayan world; return to Guatemala and cross the city of Antigua.
DAY 18: ANTIGUA GUATEMALA
Tour of the picturesque city center of Antigua Guatemala (UNESCO), one of the jewels of colonial architecture in America and the former capital of Guatemala; optional climb of the active Pacaya volcano in the afternoon or visit the Museum of Coffee and Mayan Traditions.
DAY 19: LAKE ATITLÁN
Boat cruise on Lake Atitlán with views of the surrounding volcanoes; visit traditional Indian villages and walk around the area; return to Antigua in the afternoon; farewell to Guatemala.
DAY 20-21: BY AIR GUATEMALA CITY – PRAGUE
