Tour program:
DAY 1: BY AIR PRAGUE – MADEIRA
By air Prague – Funchal (ev. with a change in Lisbon), accommodation in the city centre.
2. DAY: EASTERN PART OF THE ISLAND – CANICAL, PENINSULA SAO LORENҪO
Morning trip to the easternmost tip of the island – Sao Lorenҫo peninsula, watching the stormy Atlantic (approx. 8 km). Visit to the whaling town of Canical. Afternoon trip along the panoramic coastal road along the northern coast to the town of Porto da Cruz (approx. 8 km); historic factory for the production of rum from sugar cane.
3. DAY: NORTH OF THE ISLAND – CASA DAS QUEIMADAS, CALDEIRÃO DO INFERNO A VERDE
North part of the island – transfer to the north coast to the town of Santana, from there inland to Casa das Queimadas, hike along the lava to Caldeirão Verde (“green cauldron” with a pond into which falls about 300 m waterfall, one of the most secluded parts of the island with many views and lush vegetation), depending on the condition, it is possible to continue to Caldeirão do Inferno (“hell’s cauldron” characterized by rock chasms, a deep canyon and at the end a rock cauldron with trickles running down the walls) (approx. 13/18 km).
4. DAY 4: CAPITAL OF FUNCHAL
Capital Funchal – morning visit to the Mercados dos Lavradores market with its flower and fish market. Then transfer to the Monte district (optional panoramic cable car ride). Visit to the tropical botanical garden and the possibility of a wicker sleigh ride through the city streets. Afternoon sightseeing tour (Town Hall Square with Baroque Town Hall, Sé Cathedral, Santa Clara Monastery) and finally, for those interested, Madeira wine tasting.
5. DAY: WEST OF MADEIRA ISLAND – RISCO WATERFALL, LEVADO 25 SPRINGS AND PORTO MONIZ
Western part of the island: the Encumeada mountain saddle with panoramic views, then on to Fanal – a walk among ancient laurels (UNESCO) ascent to the plateau of Paul da Serra at 1600 m (the only flat place in Madeira), then towards Rabaҫal, from there a hike to the impressive Risco waterfall and then to the 25 springs levadas (a lushly vegetated canyon with numerous trickles of water). The next stop will be in the northwestern corner of the island, the small town of Porto Moniz with its volcanic lakes (about 15 km).
6. DAY 6: CENTRAL PART OF THE ISLAND – PICO ARIEIRO AND RUIVO
Mountain stage – the highest peaks of Madeira: early morning departure below Pico do Ariero, from there a mountain crossing over the peak (1818 m above sea level), through several tunnels and then a hike up to the highest mountain of the island Pico Ruivo (1862 m above sea level), beautiful views all along the route (about 6 km). On the way back, a stop in the picturesque town of Santana with its traditional brightly painted houses with reed roofs; further along the north coast to São Vincente; possibility to visit the volcanic cave of São Vincente.
7. DAY 7: CENTRAL PART OF THE ISLAND – PAUL DA SERRA, LEVADA DO PAUL A CABO GIRÃO
Sightseeing tour through the rural north and west coast of the island with a variety of beautiful stops and viewpoints. Royal Levada do Rei (approx. 10 km), Bride’s Veil waterfall, the picturesque town of Porto Moniz with the possibility of bathing in lava pools. The westernmost point of the island , Ponta do Pargo, with a lighthouse and views of the cliffs of the west coast.
8. DAY: FLIGHT MADEIRA – PRAGUE
Air return Funchal – Prague.
