Madeira

Madeira is often referred to as the “island of eternal spring” and this is very apt. This volcanic island is literally a hiking paradise and can be visited at almost any time of the year. The weather here is changeable, but temperatures do not fluctuate significantly throughout the year. It is not a destination primarily for families with young children or for a relaxing seaside holiday. Active travellers or families with older children (from about 10 years of age – depending on the hiking inclination and the parents’ confidence in the children’s firm step – some places may be exposed) will find it more to their liking. Swimming in the sea is possible here (in summer), but don’t expect many sunny sandy beaches. You’re more likely to encounter cliffs or rocky entrances to the sea. Volcanic pools – dammed or artificially created bodies of water on the shoreline – offer more swimming comfort. The neighbouring island of Porto Santo, on the other hand, is very favourable for relaxing by the sea.

On the other hand, you will rarely find so many marked hiking trails and such a varied landscape (from mountain ranges, to laurel forests or rocky coastlines with incredible views). And then many other tourist attractions – see below for inspiration.

We can offer you the following services in Madeira:

  • airfare – either direct flights from Prague (4.5 hours flight) or various cheaper combinations with a connection in Portugal or Germany
  • accommodation (plus we can advise on the best location for your needs)
  • car rental
  • tailor-made program + on-site advice (advantage due to the daily variability of the weather, when it is necessary to change many times)
  • guided tours – for groups of 4 or more (many routes are from A to B, the guide/driver allows you to enjoy the tours without worrying about how to get back to the car, plus his knowledge of the environment allows you to enjoy Madeira to the full)

FAQ:

  • What is the best time to visit?
Madeira is a year-round destination with a mild subtropical climate – the most pleasant season for hiking is spring and autumn, and summer for swimming.
  • Are there swimming beaches in Madeira?
Swimming in the sea is possible in Madeira, especially in the summer months, but it is not a typical beach destination. Most of the coastline is made up of cliffs and rocky entrances to the water, with only a minimum of sandy beaches (e.g. in Calheta or Machico). The natural volcanic pools at Porto Moniz or Lido, or the landscaped sea baths, are ideal for comfortable swimming. Madeira is generally better suited for active exploration than for a seaside holiday. If you’re looking for long sandy beaches and quiet bathing, we recommend the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, which is easily reached by ferry.
  • Do I need to rent a car in Madeira?
We recommend a car for exploring the island – there is a bus service, but it’s not as flexible. A car can also take you to the mountains or lesser-known places. We will be happy to arrange car rental for you.
  • What are the most popular tours and excursions in Madeira?
Some of the most popular are the hike from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, hikes along levadas like Levada das 25 Fontes or Levada do Caldeirão Verde. There are also hikes to the Cabo Girão lookout or the eastern tip of Ponta de São Lourenço.
  • Can I hike the levadas with children?
Yes, but the choice of route is important. Madeira is not primarily for families with young children – its terrain is often challenging and some hiking trails are on narrow paths without handrails. However, the levadas can be hiked with children, especially if they are used to walking longer trails and have a sure step. For families with children from about 10 years old and for active travellers, the island is ideal. Good routes include, for example, Levada dos Balcões (short, safe, with great views), or parts of Levada do Furado. On the other hand, more challenging levadas with tunnels or exposed sections (e.g. Levada das 25 Fontes) are only recommended for experienced hikers and older children under supervision. For younger children, a baby carrier is preferable to a stroller.
